GOREgeous in Gore!

Weather plays a huge role in a summer camp experience.

Tomorrow begins the first official day of summer camp at Camp Rock Enon. Hundreds of Cub Scouts, scads of dads, many moms, and legions of leaders will arrive and invade the tranquility.

Right now, the weather looks great for the week. Just the usual chance of afternoon thunderboomers to mess up the lakefront plans.

We have been to CRE for summer camp when there wasn't a drop of rain to be found, searing heat, 50 degree mornings (on the day of the Polar Bear Swim), and constant rain (12 inches in 3 days).

Still, it is perfect. The weather just adds spice to the memories.

See you at camp.

CRE Beaver Day announced

Straight from the home office:
This message is for everyone interested in making Camp Rock Enon the best it can be!

As many of you know, our Camp Ranger, Frank Moore, has been out of commission for the last month due to an accident. Bob Hickel has stepped in and is doing a great job in getting camp ready to open, but it is definitely a job for many and not just one.

If you are that person that wants to help make “The Rock” the best it can be and can perform any type of labor to help the camp, please report to Camp Rock Enon at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2009, to participate in the Beaver Day.  There will all sorts of projects to complete (a partial list is included below), and EVERYONE IS WELCOME.  Please contact the Scout Office, 540-662-2551 or sacbsa@sac-bsa.org to let us know if you are participating so we can make sure we have enough food for everyone.

Many other projects are available and may be assigned.  Tools will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own favorites, especially if you have power tools you want to show off.  Please come ready with your own work gloves, sturdy boots, and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty!

Lunch will be provided by the camp.

Who's invited?  Everyone!  Bring troops, packs, crews, families, and friends;  but most of all, bring yourselves, so you can be proud of your work for Camp Rock Enon!

There is a Facebook event--check it out!

Camperships in need of a campership!

Following up on an earlier post--our campership fund needs campership funds!

The Camp Rock Enon fan page on Facebook just released an announcement that with a record demand this year, the fund is in the red.  The council is helping every way they can.

As of today, 27 Scouts have been helped to the tune of $2300.

The Facebook Update challenged its fans to generate $10 per fan to put the fund back in the black.  Could be a lot of fun to see how that challenge will work out!

If you would like to help out with the challenge, feel free to drop a check for any amount to:

BSA
Attn.:  Campership Fund
107 Youth Development Court
Winchester VA  22602

(Write "Blog" on the "Memo" line and we'll track the results--readers or fans!)

Oh, and become a "Fan of Camp Rock Enon" while you are on Facebook!

CRE (and the CRE fans) really are the best!

2009 Webelos Crossover at Camp Rock Enon

Webelos Crossover is coming up fast!  Our Webelos are aging out into the Boy Scout troops of their choice.

The main event will be at Camp Rock Enon from 03-05 APR 2009.  Past years have brought everything from great camping, to soggy, dripping 40 degree days and windstorms at night--OK, still great camping.

"Be prepared" indeed!

Each boy comes a Webelos Scout and leaves a Boy Scout.  The weekend is full of activity, including all of the requirements for Scout and Tenderfoot (the final test of the Tenderfoot physical fitness is done with the new troop in 30 days).  Each boy will make the move from shooting BB guns to .22 rifles.  Leatherwork merit badges are earned by all.

The deadline for getting in your paperwork is 20 MAR.  They will not accept registrations after this date, so contact the Scout Office at 540-662-2551 and get signed up!

Webelos Scouts:  $40
Adults:  $20

Boy Scouts who come up for the ceremony and plan to camp overnight need to register by then too.  They can pre-purchase dinner when they register for $5.

This is a great experience for your Scouts to get them started down the trail to Eagle.

"The Rock" Rocks

About 10 Scouters, professional and volunteer, gathered today to walk through every area, building and outhouse at Camp Rock Enon.

The camp inspection is a vital part of making sure all the big stuff, and lots of the little stuff, gets squared away before CRE is open for the summer camp season.

(By the way, there are still a few slots open for the 2 Cub Resident Camp weeks at the end of June and beginning of July!  Don't delay!)

Three of the campsites are scheduled to have new latrines built before camp begins.  That will only leave 3 of the old ones still around!

The weather was a perfect 77 degrees with plenty of sun and no bugs.  It was a great day to get out and see the Rock.

You won't be disappointed when you come this year.  Everything is shaping up for another big year, with record attendance.

Are you coming to Camp Rock Enon this summer?  What unit and which week?
