Centennial Patch Design Competition at CRE

[Reposted from the Shenandoah Area Council blog.]

Competition Announcement

The Shenandoah Area Council is inviting all Scouts and Scouters to submit a design for our local Centennial Celebration patch.

Submissions will be accepted at the Scout Office and at Camp Rock Enon until 15 AUG 2009.

A committee will review designs and have a graphic artist prepare final patch designs in September.

The winning designer will receive recognition for designing the patch set and a complete set of patches.

Design Requirements

Required lettering:

• “Shenandoah Area Council”

• “Centennial Celebration”

• “BSA” or BSA logo

• “1910 – 2010”

A possible working concept:

A four inch round patch with a half-inch blank space around the edge has been proposed. The central space (a three inch round) would have an embroidered design incorporating the design and wording. Each event during the centennial year would have a segment to be added to the blank half-inch rim. A CSP will also be developed using this design.

Or create your own design!

H1N1 Swine Flu pre-screening form

Per the Centers for Disease Control, H1N1 (Swine) Flu has reached the pandemic level.

[A current image of the CDC map here.]

As a precaution, Camp Rock Enon is screening everyone who comes into camp for Swine Flu.

Each unit can help speed in the check-in process at Camp Rock Enon by filling in the top portion of this page: Camp/Activity Participant ILI Pre‐Screening Form

The form has 6 questions to be answered by the screener (please do not check off the boxes).

From the form:
If fever and (2) TWO or more boxes are checked “yes” above, give the patient a regular mask to wear and instruct them to keep it on until told it is ok to take it off.

The medical officer or appropriate staff member will determine if any participant needs to be quarantined and parents of youth members called to pick them up from the camp/activity.

The medical officer or appropriate staff member may also determine that an adult is unable to participate based on the above criteria.

Camp Rock Enon is taking this seriously to help keep all campers safe. Anyone visiting CRE must complete the form prior to entering the camp.

GOREgeous in Gore!

Weather plays a huge role in a summer camp experience.

Tomorrow begins the first official day of summer camp at Camp Rock Enon. Hundreds of Cub Scouts, scads of dads, many moms, and legions of leaders will arrive and invade the tranquility.

Right now, the weather looks great for the week. Just the usual chance of afternoon thunderboomers to mess up the lakefront plans.

We have been to CRE for summer camp when there wasn't a drop of rain to be found, searing heat, 50 degree mornings (on the day of the Polar Bear Swim), and constant rain (12 inches in 3 days).

Still, it is perfect. The weather just adds spice to the memories.

See you at camp.

CRE Beaver Day announced

Straight from the home office:
This message is for everyone interested in making Camp Rock Enon the best it can be!

As many of you know, our Camp Ranger, Frank Moore, has been out of commission for the last month due to an accident. Bob Hickel has stepped in and is doing a great job in getting camp ready to open, but it is definitely a job for many and not just one.

If you are that person that wants to help make “The Rock” the best it can be and can perform any type of labor to help the camp, please report to Camp Rock Enon at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 30, 2009, to participate in the Beaver Day.  There will all sorts of projects to complete (a partial list is included below), and EVERYONE IS WELCOME.  Please contact the Scout Office, 540-662-2551 or sacbsa@sac-bsa.org to let us know if you are participating so we can make sure we have enough food for everyone.

Many other projects are available and may be assigned.  Tools will be provided, but you are encouraged to bring your own favorites, especially if you have power tools you want to show off.  Please come ready with your own work gloves, sturdy boots, and clothes that you don't mind getting dirty!

Lunch will be provided by the camp.

Who's invited?  Everyone!  Bring troops, packs, crews, families, and friends;  but most of all, bring yourselves, so you can be proud of your work for Camp Rock Enon!

There is a Facebook event--check it out!

Camp Ranger down!

Scouts and Scouters--news flash!

Camp Ranger Frank Moore is down, literally.  He fell off a ladder installing an exhaust fan on the dining hall.  Apparently a dislocated shoulder and a broken hip has brought him to the hospital.

Frank is facing surgery, and I'm sure would appreciate everyone's prayers and well-wishes.

Needless to say, at the height of the busy season to prepare Camp Rock Enon for a busy summer, there is a lot to do now, and not a lot of Camp Ranger to do it.

Watch for a list of projects soon that will need quick volunteer efforts to get squared away.

Let's help Frank recover by taking CRE's "to do" list off his plate.

Check CRE on Facebook for updates.  And, the blog of course.
