2011 Cub Resident Camp Leader Guide available

[OK, a little snowy in this picture, but it sure won't look like this in June!]

Welcome all! I am very excited about overseeing Cub Resident Camp, and I hope everyone is looking forward to an exciting time at Cub Resident Camp this summer. Let’s face it; the highlight of the Scouting year is summer camp. It is time to learn new skills, make new friends and enjoy the outdoors. Scouts from all over the council will meet at camp looking for a fun filled program for either a few nights or an entire week. Our Staff has been preparing a fantastic summer program that is filled with memories to last a lifetime.
Did you know that if your pack attends a summer camp your Scouts are more likely to stay involved in the Scouting program? Please take time to prepare for your adventure at camp. Remember that it’s not so much the amount of requirements completed as it is to gain knowledge, develop confidence, appreciate our natural environment and ensure its survival. For more information and forms please visit www.sac-bsa.org. I look forward to meeting all of you this summer at camp!
To help make sure you and your Scouts are prepared for camp we have prepared this in-depth guide of everything you need to know for camp. Please take time to read this guide from cover to cover, absorb all of the information in it and pass it along to your other leaders and your Scouts. Remember it is each pack’s responsibility to organize their leadership in a way that allows the boys to attend camp.
In order to ensure you have trained leader we will be offer BALOO training each week of Cub Camp.
Let’s put the "outing" back in Scouting! Celebrate America and its history with us this summer.
Rachel Ringler
Cub Resident Program Director

In the “shoot the orange” challenge another Troop 212 leader, Doug Gardner won. Congratulations and thanks to all for a great time. We hope to see you today at 3 pm for the golf challenge in front of the Trading Post.

HISTORY OF THE ROCK (Pt. 3)

Luckily, no one was injured. We hope that some Leaders will show up today and show us their archery skills.

Heat Wave Safety Tips

  • Slow down. Strenuous activities should be reduced, eliminated, or rescheduled to the coolest time of the day. Individuals at risk should stay in the coolest available place, not necessarily indoors.
  • Dress for summer. Lightweight light-colored clothing reflects heat and sunlight, and helps your body maintain normal temperatures.
  • Put less fuel on your inner fires. Foods (like proteins) that in-crease metabolic heat production also increase water loss.
  • Drink plenty of water or other non-alcohol fluids. Your body needs water to keep cool. Drink plenty of fluids even if you don't feel thirsty. .

Did you know...
That if you miss a few points on your inspection score you can get them back by doing service pro-jects? See your camp commissioner or visit the front desk in Buffalo Lodge to see what jobs are available.

Remember there are places in Camp Rock Enon that are off limits to leaders and campers. This is mostly for YOUR safety.

Whispering Rock--04 JUL 2010

WELCOME TO THE ROCK!

A Note From Pooh:
When I decided to join Staff in 1996 I never thought it would be such a long term commitment. But I am thrilled to be here and look forward to serving you this week.

As you go throughout this week I want you to look for opportunities to show the Scouting Spirit. If you see a piece of trash “Be Clean” and pick it up and throw it away. If you see someone that looks like they are having a bad day “Be Cheerful” and help them be happy. Do you get the idea? I hope so.

So as I close this little talk I want to say Welcome to Camp Rock Enon and I hope this is the best summer camp experience you have ever had.

THANKS FOR COMING TO “THE ROCK”
ENJOY YOUR STAY!!

Footwear Policy for Camp Rock Enon--Effective Immediately

FOOTWEAR POLICY (RULES) FOR CAMP ROCK ENON

The below policy is hereby effective immediately regarding proper footwear use at Camp Rock Enon:

1. Open-toed shoes, and/or sandals, and Vibram FiveFinger type shoes are not appropriate footwear at Camp Rock Enon and are prohibited anywhere on the property except in the showers.

2. Scouts, leaders and staff must wear closed-toed shoes to all meals, daily activities and evening activities. Closed-toed shoes are defined as sneakers or tennis shoes, trail shoes, or hiking boots.

3. Rubber clogs (Brand Name - Crocâ clogs) with closed toe and strap are permitted during the following times:

v  Directly from campsite to shower house and back.
v  Free time in campsite.
v  Directly from campsite to waterfront and back (if you are planning to go from waterfront to another activity you must wear closed-toe shoes as described in paragraph 1).
v  Specific times your activity requires water shoes (example: creek exploration).

The wearing of socks with the rubber clogs shoes is highly encouraged to minimize slippage, blisters, and cuts.

4. Visitors will only be allowed as far as the dining hall in open-toed footwear. Visitors must have the appropriate closed-toed footwear to proceed to the campsites and program areas.

5. The on duty Camp Director, Ranger, or Campmaster are the final authority in determining whether footwear is unsafe on Camp Rock Enon property. You may also direct any questions regarding this policy to these same individuals or the Camping Committee.

6. Campers, leaders, and staff will be required to return to there campsite immediately to change into appropriate footwear for those activities requiring closed-toed shoes. Continued non-compliance with this policy may result in the offender losing program privileges or being asked to leave Camp Rock Enon property. Other actions may be taken at the discretion of the Shenandoah Area Council and Camping Committee as deemed appropriate.

Share YOUR Fun at Camp Rock Enon

Have you ever had fun at Camp Rock Enon?

Earned a merit badge, used a shotgun, climbed a cliff, caught a fish...or just enjoyed a cold day in the snow?

So the big question:  WHY ARE YOU KEEPING ALL THE FUN TO YOURSELF?

Last year, thousands of Scouts stayed for summer camp or came back for other weekends during the off-season.

Camp Rock Enon would like to hear from YOU!

Here's how...

Facebook
You can post your pictures and comments to Camp Rock Enon on Facebook.
Search for Camp Rock Enon and friend him...her...it.  CRE has even been known to add comments and chat a little.
Camp Rock Enon really likes to be tagged on pictures.  When you look as good as CRE, that's just the way it is.

Email
Camp Rock Enon has email.  Yep, and it isn't the Ranger's email either.
Send a picture and a little information about what you did at camp, and we'll share it on this blog.
Have an idea?  CRE can forward your camp suggestion straight to the Camping Committee.  Seriously, CRE is that powerful.

Twitter
Do you tweet?  Camp Rock Enon does!  "Follow" me, boys!...and girls!...and adults!  Now that CRE has wireless, the birds aren't the only ones who tweet.

Scouts and Scouters--if you see Pooh, tell him I'm watching...always watching...
